Seven new faculty members joined William Woods University this year. They are Dr. Lynn Hanrahan, associate professor of graduate education; Dr. Woojun Lee, assistant professor of sports management; Steve Middleton, instructor in athletic training; Steve Saravara, J.D., assistant professor of criminal justice; Dr. Paul Schiltz, veterinarian; Michele Smith, associate professor of equestrian studies; and Rachel Utrecht, technical services librarian.
In addition, new division chairs were named. Dr. Linda Davis will chair business, law, technology and languages; Dr. Tim Hanrahan will chair education, human performance and humanities; and Raymond Hune will chair mathematics and science. Dr. Caroline Boyer continues as chair of arts and behavioral sciences, and Jennie Petterson continues as chair of equestrian studies
Lynn Hanrahan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Central Missouri State University and three degrees from St. Louis University—a Master of Arts degree, an Education Specialist and a Ph.D., all in education administration.
She has been a teacher, principal, adjunct professor and educational consultant in a variety of locations, including St. Louis; Shawnee Mission, Kansas; Overland Park, Kansas; and Phoenix, Arizona. Most recently she was an educational consultant and school improvement specialist for Generation Ready (previously named JBHM Education Group).
Lee earned his Master of Science degree in kinesiology, with an emphasis in sport management, from Texas A&M and his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, with a minor in leisure sport, from Woosuk University in South Korea.
A recent graduate of Texas A&M University with a Ph.D. in kinesiology and sport management, Lee has been a graduate teaching assistant in the department of health and kinesiology at Texas A&M since 2010. His research focuses on social justice and diversity and inclusion issues in the sport industry.
Middleton has 15 years’ experience treating a variety of patients, including athletes from high school to college as well as athletes in the
NFL and the Olympics. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and a Master of Science degree in rehabilitation science at California University of Pennsylvania. He is pursuing a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree through the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences.
In addition, Middleton holds certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, National Strength & Conditioning Association and the International Kinesio Taping Association.
Saravara has teaching experience in criminal justice and industrial/homeland security, both live and online. He has taught in community college and state university settings and was a visiting fellow at the City University of Hong Kong in 2012.
After earning an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Massachusetts Bay Community College, Saravara completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science at the University of Massachusetts/Boston and a Juris Doctorate from the Massachusetts School of Law.
Saravara brings varied experience in the field as a regional emergency planning public health consultant, reserve police officer/internal affairs and investigation consultant, assistant district attorney, and private security account manager.
A graduate of the University of Illinois with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine, Schiltz has served WWU’s equine population for 18 years as a veterinarian with
Equine Medical Services. He has an extensive background in sports medicine and reproduction, as well as general equine medicine and surgery. He has served WWU both as an adjunct instructor and guest lecturer for Veterinary Medicine and Reproduction and Equine Evaluation, as well as helping to instruct horse management students in a variety of health care procedures.
In addition to teaching Practical Anatomy and Conditioning and helping to design a new practicum course dedicated to advanced horse health management, Schiltz will provide veterinary care to the university’s 200 horses and direct the new Center for Equine Medicine.
A hunter/jumper instructor with more than 45 years of experience, Smith has taught at the college level for more than 25 years. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, both from William Woods University.
From 1991 to 2008, Smith worked at Stephens College, where she was an associate professor and chair of the equestrian department for seven years. She has been an instructor at William Woods intermittently since 2009, filling in for faculty who were on leave or retired. In the ’80s, she served as facility manager, hunter/jumper riding instructor and director of placement at WWU.
Utrecht will serve as the technical services librarian at William Woods. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics at the
University of Central Missouri. She then achieved her Master of Science degree in library science and information services from UCM.
During her graduate assistantship she taught multiple sections of the University Library and Research skills.
