Fun and exciting times await those attending William Woods University’s new student orientation. Freshmen and transfer students alike will “Capture the Moment” during their “#selfie”-themed first week at The Woods Aug. 19-23.
Approximately 275 new students are expected to attend, including 17 who are legacies because a family member attended WWU.
Students can capture the moment on the red carpet with family, new friends and Screech, the WWU mascot, on the Tucker Dining Hall lawn throughout the day. Pictures will be posted to Facebook.
“Students should look forward to a week full of fun and engaging events that will help them transition to life at William Woods,” Amy Dittmer, director of career services and student transition, said. “They should also get excited to hear Ryan Penneau from Take Back College; his larger-than-life keynote has been a student favorite for the last four years.”
The week of transition begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, with residential student check-in at McNutt Campus Center, followed by residence hall move in. Commuter students check in at 10 a.m., also in McNutt Campus Center.
The Office of Alumni Activities hosts a legacy lunch at 11 a.m. for new students and their families whose relatives have attended WWU.
Dr. Jahnae H. Barnett, university president, officially welcomes new students to WWU at 1 p.m. in Cutlip Auditorium of the McNutt Campus Center.
“The orientation leaders and recruitment counselors put together a dance to energize all of the new students, families and friends prior to Dr. Barnett’s welcome address,” Beth Oseroff, graduate assistant for career services and student transition, said. “I am most excited about seeing them up onstage!”
Afternoon sessions include sorority and fraternity open houses, orientation group meetings and success in the classroom.
The Ivy Ceremony, the first part of a two-part tradition that culminates at graduation, begins at 5 p.m. at Senior Lake (rain location: McNutt Campus Center). A family and friends farewell barbecue follows on the Tucker Dining Hall Lawn. Residence hall meetings at 9 p.m. will be followed by an ice cream social on Smith, Allen, Swearingen lawn.
On Thursday, Aug. 20, students become acquainted with other parts of life at The Woods during sessions on majors, money matters and information technology. Also on tap are adviser meetings; dessert with Faith, Counseling and Health Services; and a campus scavenger hunt. Fraternity and sorority events and a game night conclude the day.
Penneau, the keynote speaker, will empower students to explore, take risks and live it up with all that college has to offer. His speech is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21.
The afternoon consists of fraternity and sorority events and a fun in the sun event. The evening is time for a little theatre with the “Community Standards and Campus Life” play and a dock party at Junior Lake.
Students will engage in critical thinking and analytical reasoning exercises Saturday, Aug. 22, followed by an afternoon of bowling or movies. Sorority preference parties and a Dynamic Discs disc golf tournament are scheduled for the evening. At 9 p.m. the first-ever Woods Glow will light up the night. Students will join the Campus Activities Board for some glow-in-the-dark fun with DJ Illuminate (Kirt Dunwoody) and DJ Shazzy (Shannon Smith).
Fraternity and sorority bid day is early Sunday morning, Aug. 23. At 1 p.m. a Health Hunt Adventure finds students exploring the vast expanses of William Woods, where they will see various animals and terrain while being introduced to basic fitness and health.
Offices will be open from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday for convenience. In the afternoon a movie will be shown at Cutlip Auditorium, and an orientation red carpet after-party will be held. Students get “the 411 on 911” during an all-campus safety event at 7 p.m. Orientation concludes Sunday night, and fall semester classes at WWU begin Aug. 24.
